Goods and Services Tax (GST) filing is the process of submitting your tax returns to the government through the GST portal. Every registered taxpayer in India must file periodic returns — monthly, quarterly, or annually — disclosing details of sales, purchases, output tax liability, and input tax credit claimed. GST was introduced on 1st July 2017 as a unified indirect tax replacing multiple central and state levies including VAT, Service Tax, Excise Duty, and CST.
The GST framework comprises CGST, SGST, IGST, and UTGST. Businesses must correctly classify their supplies under HSN/SAC codes, charge the appropriate tax rate (5%, 12%, 18%, or 28%), and reconcile their returns with supplier data available in GSTR-2A and GSTR-2B to claim eligible Input Tax Credits. Non-compliance can result in penalties, interest charges, and even cancellation of GST registration.
GST compliance is mandatory for a wide range of businesses and professionals operating in India.

Any business with an annual turnover exceeding ₹40 lakh (₹20 lakh for service providers and special category states) must register for GST. E-commerce operators, inter-state suppliers, and certain notified categories must register irrespective of turnover.
GSTR-1 is due on the 11th of the following month for monthly filers. GSTR-3B is due on the 20th of the following month. GSTR-9 (annual return) is due on 31st December of the following financial year. Late filing attracts penalties of ₹50–₹200 per day.
Late filing of GSTR-3B attracts a late fee of ₹50 per day (₹25 CGST + ₹25 SGST) up to a maximum of ₹5,000 per return. For nil returns, the late fee is ₹20 per day. Additionally, interest at 18% per annum applies on the outstanding tax liability.
ITC can be claimed on goods and services used for business purposes, provided you have valid tax invoices, the supplier has filed their returns, and the goods/services are not on the blocked credit list under Section 17(5) of the CGST Act.
GSTR-1 is a detailed return of outward supplies (sales) filed monthly or quarterly. GSTR-3B is a summary return that includes both output tax liability and input tax credit, and is used to pay the net GST liability each month.
